Driving the truck stays the cheapest option up to about 3,412 miles on these rates. Beyond that the container and the mover pull ahead, because mileage and fuel grow with every mile while a container price does not.
Interstate movers must give you a written estimate and the federal rights booklet before you book. A binding estimate cannot be exceeded, while a non-binding one can: the rules limit what the mover may demand at delivery when it is, and the balance falls due later. How this moving cost calculator works

Why long-distance movers quote by weight

An interstate move is priced from the weight of the shipment and the distance travelled, which is why a quote asks how many rooms you have and then estimates a weight. The estimate is a rate applied to a guess, and the guess is checked on a weigh station scale on the way.

Anything that adds weight adds cost: books, tools, a piano, a garage full of things nobody has opened in five years. The cheapest way to reduce a moving bill is to own less by the day of the move, and the second cheapest is to pack it yourself.

The three routes and what each one really costs

A full-service mover provides the truck, the labour, the driving and the packing if you want it, and carries liability for the goods. That liability is limited by weight unless you buy full-value protection, so a valuation charge is not an upsell to refuse without thinking: without it, a destroyed laptop is compensated by its weight.

A container is dropped at the door, packed and loaded by you, driven by the company, and delivered to the new address, which is why it sits between the other two on both cost and effort. Some companies will store it in transit, which is useful when the new place is not ready.

A rented truck is the cheapest line on the page and the most expensive decision if something goes wrong: you drive it, you fuel it, you insure it, and you are responsible for anything broken. Weigh the saving against three days of work and a damaged sofa you cannot claim for.

What the comparison leaves out, and what to check

Two quotes are only comparable if they describe the same service. Ask whether packing, unpacking, stairs, a long carry, storage, and a shuttle truck at either end are included, because those are where the price moves after the estimate is signed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to move?

It depends on the weight, the distance and who does the work, and no national average survives contact with a specific move. What this page does is make the three routes comparable on your own rate cards, so a quote can be tested against the alternatives instead of being accepted because it arrived first.

What is valuation coverage, and do I need it?

It is the mover liability for your goods, and standard coverage pays by weight rather than by value, so a damaged computer is compensated at a few cents a pound. Full-value protection costs extra or carries a deductible and pays far more realistically. It is not an insurance policy, and asking for the coverage terms in writing before the move is the difference between a claim and an argument.

What is the difference between a binding and a non-binding estimate?

A binding estimate is a fixed price: the mover cannot charge more than the figure given, though it only covers the services listed. A non-binding estimate can be exceeded, and federal rules limit what the mover may demand at delivery when it is, with the balance due afterwards. Ask which kind you have been given, and check that both quotes cover the same list of services.

How can I reduce the cost of a move?

Move fewer things, because weight is the price: sell, donate or dispose before the truck is loaded rather than paying to ship something you will never unpack. Then pack yourself, avoid a long carry and stairs where possible, move in the middle of the month and outside the summer, and collect at least three in-home estimates rather than three phone calls.

Are movers liable if something is damaged?

They are liable within the coverage you have agreed to, which is why the valuation question matters. Photograph everything of value before it is wrapped, list high-value items in writing, and inspect the inventory at delivery rather than days afterwards. The paperwork generated at collection is the evidence base for any claim.

What are moving-in costs?

Everything paid to start living somewhere new: rent and utility deposits, connection and installation fees, cleaning, and the first shop for a bare kitchen. These are separate from the moving bill and are easy to forget when a quote is being compared, so they are added to the cheapest option here rather than left out.

Do I need a special licence to drive a rental truck?

In the United States a commercial driver licence is generally required above 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight, and rental trucks marketed to households are built to sit below that line. Your own licence class and the rental agreement still decide what you may drive, and the agreement also says who pays for damage.
